Summary

Small, comfortable, peaceful, traditional college in former monastery of The Cowley Fathers. Located a short walk from central Oxford with convenient parking.

Introduction

St Stephen's House is a Theological College and a Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford, situated close to Magdalen Bridge in a quiet street running between Cowley Road and Iffley Road in East Oxford. Formerly a monastery, with the warm, relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of a country house with modern facilities. There are only 50 bedrooms so you will never feel overwhelmed, but unlike other Oxford Colleges, there isn't a Porters Lodge or a Reception, so you will be responsible for accessing the college yourself. Please be aware that there is no disabled access, and the entrance is by steep concrete steps.

Providing student accommodation, and as such, the bedrooms are not to hotel standards and do not have televisions or a telephone. However, all bedrooms are clean, tidy and comfortable, with a refreshment tray, towels and toiletries (towels are changed once a week). Unless you have selected an ensuite room, you will be sharing unisex bathroom facilities.

If you are staying during term-time, please note that the college operates a silence policy during the night hours between 11.00pm and 7.30am weekdays to allow students and guests to study and sleep undisturbed, but do be aware that Church bells are rung early in the morning.

Smoking is not permitted in any of our buildings and pets are not allowed. Also the college is unable to accept bookings from Stag & Hen parties.

History to the present day

St Stephen's House is sited in the former monastery of The Cowley Fathers founded by Fr Meaux Benson. The Grade II 19th century building is linked by cloisters to a very fine, Grade 1 listed church designed by Bodley.

Food and Drinks

Breakfast is either a cooked or, on Fridays, a continental-style breakfast in the Dining Room.  Breakfast timings will differ depending on vacation or term-time, but you will always be able to help yourself to the continental-style breakfast from very early morning until 9:30am.

Self-catering: Access to the Student Kitchen is available during the vacation. The kitchen facilities include ovens, electric hobs, and a microwave.

Nearby Restaurants, Cafes & Pubs: There are a number of restaurants, pubs & cafes, within a few minutes walk of St Stephen's House.

Grounds and gardens

Set in private gated grounds, there is a large lawn where children can play and another peaceful cloister garden with chairs and tables where you can relax in the sun.

Other facilities

Laundry: There is a laundry on the lower-ground floor, with coin operated washing machines and dryers (£1.40 per use), as well as ironing boards and irons. Guests need to provide their own washing powder.

Limited Car parking is only available out of term (Easter & Summer holidays): The rate is £6.00 per day, per car, and is payable by cash or cheque only, payable to "St Stephen's House". Parking must be requested at the time of booking by leaving a message in the "Additional information" section of the booking form. The car park is only normally available to you whilst you are a checked-in guest at St Stephen's House, i.e. between 2:30pm check-in and 10:30am check-out.

In walking distance of all city centre sights. No staff on site at weekend. But very clean and warm. Biscuits on tea tray were a nice touch. Would definitely stay again

Great place and very good value for Oxford. Staff were friendly (and very forgiving when I overslept and was late checking out). Breakfast was great. Furniture good quality. Mattress super comfortable. Key collection and drop off a breeze. Would definitely stay again.
